The Division of Safety and Health is one of five divisions within the Worker Protection Bureau. We make keeping New York’s workforce safe our number one priority. The Safety and Health umbrella includes nine Programs. We also offer safety and health information and assistance to employers and employees.

For Public Employees
Public Employee Safety & Health

The Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau (PESH), created in 1980, enforces safety and health standards promulgated under the United States Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and several state standards.

Workplace Violence Prevention

Workplace violence is any physical assault or act of aggressive behavior occurring where a public employee performs any work-related duty in the course of his or her employment.

NY HERO Act
The NY HERO Act is intended to prevent current and future occupational exposure to airborne infectious diseases at workplaces throughout New York state.
New Legislation In Effect January 2022
Elevator Licensing Information
Effective January 1, 2022, new legislation requires businesses and occupations that engage in design, construction, installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, service, and repair of elevators and other conveyances to be licensed by the New York State Department of Labor.
Ride Safe NY
Amusement Ride Safety & Inspections
The New York State Department of Labor enforces amusement ride safety throughout the state, except in New York City. Labor Department employees inspect all rides at stationary amusement parks at least once a year, and rides at traveling fairs or carnivals are inspected every time the ride is set up in a new location.
