Mine Safety Training Program

The Mine Safety Training Program provides high quality safety instruction to mine employees in New York State.  It is a grant program funded by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) since 1979. The program is designed to train workers in the surface nonmetal mining industry.

Every training program we present follows MSHA recommended outlines.  We focus on the individual learning styles of mine employees and the hazards of surface mining in the state.

Content, of course, varies according to the type and nature of mining.  We issue training certificates to all who complete the course.

We encourage employers to request training in advance to meet annual training requirements under 30 CFR Part 46.  Part 46 requires that the mine operators:

• Give each miner a copy of their training certificate
• Keep all training certificates on file for two years 

Part 46 Training - Training complies with mandatory requirements for training and retraining miners and others at these mines:

• Shell Dredging
• Sand
• Gravel
• Surface Stone
• Surface Clay
• Colloidal Phosphate
• Surface Limestone Mines

Our course content follows specific guidelines issued by MSHA.  We base our program of instruction on:

• Instructor availability
• Geographic location
• Seasonal needs of the industry

Recommended areas of instruction include:

• Machine Guarding
• Powered Haulage
• Electrical Safety
• Personal and Fall Protection
• Quarry Hazards
• Hearing Conservation
• Dust Control
• Hazard Communication.

All employers who use our services must:

• Have a valid, active mine identification number
• Have a contractor designation provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health (MSHA)
• Operate an active mine operation in New York State
