Overview

The Industry Inspection Bureau enforces regulations for the protection of the public in the areas of amusement rides, some grandstands, tents and bleachers, places of public assembly, passenger tramways/ski lifts, storage of explosives, and certain types of coin-operated machines. In addition, the Bureau enforces regulations in window cleaning, aerial performances, High Voltage Proximity and other hazardous areas. 

The Bureau also supports both the Passenger Tramway Advisory Council, which advises the Commissioner of Labor on matters concerning passenger tramway safety and alpine skiing, and the Carnival, Fair and Amusement Park Safety Advisory Board, which advises the Commissioner on matters relating to amusement device safety at carnivals, fairs and amusement parks. Types of Inspections

  • The Industry Inspection Bureau conducts inspections to ensure compliance with inspection requirements for elevators and escalators in factory and mercantile establishments. The Engineering Services Unit reviews and approves plans for elevators and escalators in factory and mercantile establishments. Code Rule 8
  • The Industry Inspection Bureau conducts inspections to ensure window cleaning equipment meets the design and safety standards set out in Code Rule 21. The Bureau also investigates accidents involving window cleaning equipment. The Engineering Services Unit reviews and approves plans for window cleaning equipment.
  • The Industry Inspection Bureau issues permit for ski tows and other passenger tramways and inspects them for compliance with applicable safety regulations. The Bureau also investigates accidents involving ski tows and other passenger tramways Code Rule 32. The Engineering Services Unit reviews and approves applications for ski tows and passenger tramways.
  • The Industry Inspection Bureau inspects places of public assembly (capacity of 100 or more) for compliance with applicable building and fire codes. Code Rule 36. The Engineering Services Unit reviews and approves plans for places of public assembly. Code Rule 36 allows Communities to take over responsibility for its enforcement.   • The Industry Inspection Bureau inspects and certifies magazines for storage of explosives and enforces certification requirements for the possession, use and sale of explosives. Code Rule 39. The Engineering Services Unit issues variances for the storage of explosives. Code Rule 39 is in the process of being updated. If you would like to provide input, please contact us at [email protected].
  • The Industry Inspection Bureau reviews and inspects safety apparatus for aerial performances greater than 20 feet in height. The Bureau also investigates accidents involving aerial performances. Code Rule 41.
  • Coin-operated machines that perform a manufacturing process (including clothes washing and drying) are inspected by the Industry Inspection Bureau for compliance with Code Rule 43.
  • The Industry Inspection Bureau issues permits for amusement devices, tents, and viewing stands. Amusement devices, tents and viewing stands are inspected for compliance with applicable safety regulations. Code Rule 45. The Engineering Services Unit reviews and approves applications for tents and bleachers for 300 or more occupants.
  • Glass doors are inspected by the Industry Inspection Bureau for compliance with the safety requirements of Code Rule 47.
  • The Industry Inspection Bureau inspects ski areas for compliance with Code Rule 54, which contains regulations providing for the safety of the public while skiing. The Bureau also investigates accidents involving skiers and snowboarders.
  • The Industry Inspection Bureau enforces regulations that protect workers from the dangers of working around high voltage (in excess of 600 volts) electrical lines and also investigates accidents involving workers' contact with such lines. Code Rule 57.
  • The Industry Inspection Bureau enforces standards to protect the public in crane work areas and enforces certification requirements for crane operators. Code Rule 61
