Developments in the New York City Labor Market
Private sector jobs in New York City rose by 60,300 over-the-year to 4,178,400 in May 2024. Gains occurred in private education and health services (+81,300), leisure and hospitality (+15,700), other services (+700), and financial activities (+200). Losses occurred in information (-12,600), professional and business services (-10,300), trade, transportation, and utilities (-9,200), natural resources, mining, and construction (-3,800), and manufacturing (-1,700).
The city's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in May, unchanged from April and a decrease of 0.2 percent from May 2023. New York State's rate was 4.2 percent in May 2024. The share of the city's working age population (16+) who were either employed or looking for a job stood at 62.3 in May.
