Developments in the Western New York Labor Market

Over the past year, the private sector job count in the Western New York region rose by 11,400, or 2.2 percent, to 529,100 in April 2023.  Gains were centered in professional and business services (+4,000), leisure and hospitality (+3,200), private education and health services (+1,800), trade, transportation and utilities (+1,500), manufacturing (+1,200), other services (+900) and natural resources, mining and construction (+400).  Employment losses were focused in financial activities (-1,200) and information (-400).  Government sector jobs increased by (+1,100) over the year.
