Developments in the Mohawk Valley Labor Market

For the 12-month period ending September 2021, the nonfarm job count in the Utica-Rome MSA increased 3,000, or 2.5 percent, to 120,700.  Private sector employment rose 2,500, or 2.8 percent, to 90,700.

Job gains were posted in:  leisure and hospitality (+1,500), government (+500), trade, transportation, and utilities (+400), professional and business services (+300), manufacturing (+200), financial activities (+100), information (+100), natural resources, mining, and construction (+100), and other services (+100).  Education and health services (-300) was the only sector that lost jobs over the year.

The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome MSA declined from 8.5 percent in August 2020 to 5.5 percent in August 2021. The unemployment rate fell from 5.6 percent in July
