Developments in the Mohawk Valley Labor Market

For the 12-month period ending February 2021, the nonfarm job count in the Utica-Rome MSA decreased 10,300, or 8.1 percent, to 116,100.  Private sector employment fell 7,600, or 8.1 percent, to 86,700.

Job losses were posted in: education and health services (-2,900), government (-2,700), leisure and hospitality (-2,200), manufacturing (-900), other services (-800), trade, transportation and utilities (-400), financial activities (-200), information (-100) and professional and business services (-100).

The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome MSA increased from 4.9 percent in February 2020 to 7.8 percent in February 2021.  The unemployment rate rose from 7.6 percent in January.
