Developments in the Mohawk Valley Labor Market

Change in Nonfarm Jobs since December 2022

For the 12-month period ending December 2023, the nonfarm job count in the Utica-Rome metro remained stable at 122,500.  Private sector employment contracted -300, or -0.3%, to 92,600. 

Job gains were posted in private education and health services (+800), government (+300), and leisure and hospitality (+300).  Trade, transportation, and utilities (-900) and manufacturing (-500) declined over the year.

The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome metro rose from 3.5% in December 2022 to 4.4% in December 2023.  The unemployment rate was 3.7% in November.
