Possible Federal Shutdown
NYSDOL Services Would Not Be Impacted By a Federal Shutdown

NYSDOL is watching the December 20th deadline for a potential federal shutdown very closely. Our services such as Unemployment Insurance benefits and workforce development programs including Career Centers, would not be impacted by a federal government shutdown.

If federal employees are furloughed, they may be eligible to receive Unemployment Insurance benefits. More information will be made available here on our website for furloughed federal workers if the federal government shuts down on December 21st.

What You Need to Know
December 2024
  • 1099-G Update: By the end of January, New Yorkers who received unemployment benefits in 2024 will receive a copy of their 1099-G in the mail.  You will also soon be able to view and print your 1099-G tax form on our website bymid-January. For more information about the form, visit our 1099-G webpage.
  • Significant changes coming to quarterly combined withholding, unemployment insurance, and wage reporting for businesses: To improve your filing experience, reduce errors, and increase compliance with employer reporting of each employee’s information, the Tax Department is streamlining withholding tax and wage reporting forms and Web File applications. These improvements will affect the way you file in March 2025. You can find the latest on these improvements at: https://www.tax.ny.gov/bus/wt/changes-2025/.
  • Cannabis Transferable Skills Assessment Tool: Check out this valuable resource specifically designed to help you discover how your previous work, training, education, hobbies, and other experiences can translate into valuable assets in the budding cannabis industry! Visit our resource page for more information on how to use the cannabis transferable skills assessment tool.
  • Youth Workers Bill of Rights: In an effort to bolster protections for New York’s youngest workers, the DOL developed the Youth Workers Bill of Rights. Written in clear and accessible language, the resource seeks to educate first time workers as they prepare to enter the labor market by explaining the rights all NY workers enjoy as well as the protections that are specific to workers under 18. The Bill of Rights will be distributed to every young worker upon receiving their working papers. It is also available as a pocket guide and downloadable poster.
  • Careers in State Service: The DOL has partnered with the New York State Department of Civil Service in establishing the Centers for Careers in Government within specific DOL Career Centers, including a center recently opened in the Capital Region. The initiative aims to bolster recruitment for thousands of vacant openings with New York State agencies, expanding access and opportunities for potential jobseekers, and easing the pathway for those interested in a rewarding career in public service.
Ensuring Equality in the Workplace
Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Access
The New York State Department of Labor (DOL) is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for the customers we serve and for our own staff. We recognize that each New Yorker who comes through our doors —whether brick and mortar or virtual—has different circumstances and we believe in accessibility to assure they have a clear pathway to learn about and utilize whatever services they need. We use data to help inform and drive outcomes to move the needle on DEI in NY. And, we work to create an environment where our own employees are empowered and diversity can thrive.
