The New York State Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires covered businesses to provide early warnings of closures and layoffs to all affected employees, their representatives, the Department of Labor and others.
The Department of Labor's Rapid Response team stands ready to assist businesses of any size at risk of downsizing or closure and their workers at risk of work reduction or layoff. This work begins with proactive outreach and layoff aversion programs. When a layoff is identified, we contact the business immediately to discuss services. Local teams make services as accessible as possible, providing both virtual and in-person options, with services scheduled at times convenient to the business and that allow for the largest engagement of the entire impacted workforce.
All impacted workers are offered services, with multiple outreach attempts made for each individual, which include valuable information about unemployment and health insurance options, resume development, job search assistance and targeted job fairs, creating opportunities for impacted workers to speak directly with hiring businesses who are seeking their skills. Staff remain in contact for as long as services are needed.
