Laborers Recruit Apprentices

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JAC) for the Southern Tier Laborers, Local Union #621, will conduct a recruitment from April 26, 2024 through August 31, 2024 for four Skilled Construction Craft Laborer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications are by appointment only. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (716) 372-2639, Monday-Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding major holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications can be printed online at www.laborers621.com and brought to the scheduled appointment or obtained in person at 1521 North Union Street, Olean, NY during the scheduled appointment. A basic math test will be scheduled during the appointment (at time of application). All applications must be received by August 31, 2024.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, including:
    • Working with sharp objects and hazardous machinery.
    • Working in environments with possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants.
    • Regularly standing and lifting, and repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures, and in all types of weather.
    • Able to lift and/or move heavy objects and equipment that are at least 50 lbs.
    • Working from heights using ladders and scaffolds.
  • Must pass a Non-Department of Transportation (DOT) drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship. May also be required to pass a medical exam at the expense of the sponsor.
  • Must pass a basic math test with a minimum score of at least 80%. The test will be given at the scheduled application appointment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles on public roads.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must be willing to travel to various job sites within the jurisdiction of the program sponsor, which includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties in Southwestern NY.
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
