Recently, Jessica did the math and was both pleased and somewhat taken aback to discover that she has close to 20 years' worth of classroom teaching experience. Currently, with the indispensable help of three paraprofessionals, she teaches in the Life Skills special education classroom at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, a room which combines functional academics with outside vocational training for some of the district's highest-need learners. She is certified in Math, ELA, General Science/Biology, Special Education, and Literacy Education. She has taught middle school and high school, general education and special education, and has a strong background in both traditional and experiential learning. Jessica's path has been a winding one, as is the case with many educators. She likes to joke that she loves what she does so much that she took a year away from education to spend in Antarctica, the only continent with no children on it, but in truth, the life experiences she has had have helped her to realize how very lucky she is to be a teacher, armed with a variety of experiences that will help her to understand and represent all learners as we undergo global changes in education. She is excited to add another learning experience as part of the Teacher Ambassador program this summer. When she is not working, Jessica can be found training with friends for her next half marathon, reading the latest book club book on her patio, or trying to bring her bowling average closer to 100 at the local bowling alley. She lives in Honeoye Falls with her two cats, Jack and Milo.

Matthew Twinam, High School
Subject: Special Education
Region: Capital
Matt Twinam has been a special education teacher at Shaker High School in the North Colonie Central School District for 25 years. Prior to that, he taught special education at Middleburgh Middle School in Middleburgh, New York. Matt earned his Bachelor's of Science in Exceptional Education from Buffalo State College and his Master's of Science in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology at the University of Albany. He also completed his School District Administrator Certificate at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams. For the past two decades, Matt has worked primarily with high school juniors and seniors, and one of the primary things he has learned is that students are more motivated to learn and graduate if they have a solid plan for their post-high-school life. Because of this, Matt has made it his mission to learn about the various transition options available in the area for graduating seniors. Matt has developed relationships with several local community colleges, so that students who are interested in pursuing college are supported as they tour campuses, explore available programs, and determine what supports are available for students with disabilities. For his hands-on active-learners, he has found the apprenticeship trades to be a great option. Local students benefit from the fact that many of the unions' apprenticeship programs are located in Latham, Shaker High School’s own backyard. For students interested in going right to work, Matt has found that state agencies like ACCES-VR are a great support for helping students land – and keep! – that important first job. Matt has also been actively involved in teaching and mentoring the next generation of educators, working with Siena College’s growing education department for the last 25 years. Matt works with 3-5 potential education majors every semester, teaching them about education in general, students with disabilities, and all parts of the IEP process. Matt is also the SSD Coordinator for the College Board. In this role, he assists students with getting and receiving IEP accommodations for PSATs, SATs, APs, and ACT exams. On a personal note, Matt lives in Latham with his wife and 10-year-old daughter, and he enjoys being active. He runs, skis, enjoys boating on Lake George, and is a former Ironman, having completed Ironman Lake Placid in 2013. He looks forward to the Teacher Ambassador Program and hopes to learn more ways to help students as they seek future work opportunities in New York’s Capital Region.

Heather Gonia, High School
Subject: CTE Counselor
Region: North Country
When Heather started off her career path, she had wanted to be an Elementary teacher, as she had always enjoyed working with younger students. When she finished her bachelor's degree from SUNY Potsdam, she found a career in Human Services where she spent the next 10 years, still contemplating a career in education. She considered Elementary Education and Library Media Specialist, but School Counseling is where she found her passion for education. She began working at Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES (FEHB) in 2016 and was placed at St. Regis Falls Central School district, where a large percentage of the population take Career and Technical Education Courses at the North Franklin Education Center (NFEC), an FEHB campus. It was the students there that really taught her the other side of Career and Technical Education. These students were always eager to get to their programs, and she saw a light in those students when they would take the thirty-minute drive to the FEHB NFEC/Salmon River campuses. She then began to see the amazing benefits of students pursuing a CTE program. When the opportunity arose for her to take a transfer and become the Career and Technical Education and New Visions Counselor at FEHB, she made the transition to that role. Heather has been a CTE counselor since 2021 and since then has also earned her Work-based Learning Extension Certification. The more she learns about Career and Technical Education the more she wants to know. She loves getting up and going to work each day. Knowing that she gets to work helping students on their path to greatness is a remarkable thing that she gets to experience each day. When she heard about the Teacher Ambassador Program and how it is tied into work-based learning, she viewed it as an opportunity to learn to be able to help the students in a even greater capacity. One of the things that she is excited about the most is being able to educate students in Elementary to Secondary settings about the different opportunities available to help them “Light the way to their future”. When she is not at work, she enjoys spending time outside with her husband and their three dogs. She is lucky to have their daughter Olivia that lives and works nearby as an Art Teacher.

John Dann, High School
Subject: Career Explorations Teacher
Region: Southern Tier
John’s journey to becoming a Career Explorations Teacher for TST BOCES in Ithaca began at the age of 14, when he started exploring careers himself. He began working summers at an ice factory in Homer, New York, delivering ice to customers everywhere between Homer and Trumansburg. When there were no deliveries to be made, John would scrape and repaint the outside of the building. At 17 John got his first job in a restaurant, washing dishes at a now-closed Ponderosa in Cortland. This job marked the beginning of an 18-year career in the hospitality industry for John. Some of the more interesting jobs he held were as a bartender at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida, an assistant kitchen manager at a summer camp in Maine, and as a waiter at an Outback Steakhouse in Charlotte, North Carolina. John was also a corporate trainer for The Cheesecake Factory and a General Manager for Panera Bread, both in Charlotte as well. At about the age of 35, John decided to go back to college and leave the restaurant industry behind. He moved home to upstate New York and enrolled at Empire State University, earning a bachelor’s in communications while also raising his two small children. John then tried his hand at freelance writing and worked for five years writing blogs and press releases for a group of marketing companies in several different countries. Covid brought an end to that though, as almost all of John’s clients went out of business within months of the pandemic beginning, so John went back to school. He earned a master’s degree in social and public policy within a couple of years, but the job market was still lean when he graduated so he became a substitute teacher at the middle and high school in Lansing, NY. Subbing went well, but didn’t pay over the summer, so John picked up a job working for the New York State Parks. He worked maintenance at the Robert Treman Marina in Ithaca for a summer, then went back to subbing in the fall. A few months into the school year, he got a call from TST BOCES about an administrative assistant position, which John accepted. This job took him to the end of the 2022-2023 school year, when the Career Explorations teacher position opened up. Having quite a bit of experience exploring careers himself, John applied for the job. John was the Career Explorations teacher for 2023-2024 and is looking forward to bringing the knowledge he gains as a WBL Summer Ambassador for the Department of Labor back to his teaching role at TST BOCES in the fall of 2024. John hadn’t planned on becoming a teacher, but being a teacher has been a great experience for him. He enjoys sharing the wisdom he’s gained in his career experiences with his students and preparing them to enter the world of work. When John isn’t at school, he enjoys spending time with his family and being physically active.
