Services for Displaced Homemakers

Overview

A displaced homemaker is a person who:

  • Previously provided unpaid services to their family (for example, a stay-at-home mom or dad)
  • Currently is unemployed or underemployed and
  • Plans to find a job and begin a career

Services at Our Career Centers

Under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, displaced homemakers are considered dislocated workers. Through a network of Career Centers, the New York State Department of Labor provides a variety of services to displaced homemakers (e.g. dislocated workers) including but not limited to:

  • Career pathway development and counseling
  • Help applying for jobs with interview preparation, resume and cover letter writing
  • Job search strategies, readiness, and referrals
  • Career and computer workshops
  • Information about training and educational services
  • Referrals to services, such as childcare, medical, housing, transportation, financial literacy needs

Displaced Homemaker Program

In addition to the services offered at our Career Centers, assistance is also available at Displaced Homemaker Program providers. They offers services to help with barriers to self sufficiency including: child care, transportation, housing, basic necessities, or employment. Others may face emotional challenges, medical needs, or legal problems.

In addition, Displaced Homemaker services may include:

  • Assertiveness and decision-making training
  • Career exploration
  • Crisis intervention and counseling
  • Dressing for success
  • Job search strategies and job clubs
  • Referral to community service agencies
  • Resume and cover letter writing
  • Occupational trainings
