Plumbers & Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers and Steamfitters, Local Union #773, will conduct a recruitment from September 9, 2024 through January 14, 2025 for five Plumber and Steamfitter apprentices and one Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Mechanic apprentice, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions – the Capital District and North Country regions of the state. 

Applications can be obtained from Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union #773 (Contact: Alexis Flewelling), 37 Luzerne Road, Queensbury, NY, or from L.H. LaPlante Co Inc. (Contact: Chris Golden), 52 Main Mill Street, Plattsburgh, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on the second Monday and Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  All applications must be received no later than January 14, 2025.

Applicants must pay a non-refundable $25.00 application processing fee at the time of application and a $25.00 testing fee on testing day.  Please note:  You may request that these fees be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  Proof will be required after selection and at the time of enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must sign the Pipe trades apprenticeship affidavit, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship, indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade (as applicable), which may include:
  • Lifting and carrying 75-100 pounds without assistance.
  • Moving/lifting piping materials up or down a flight of stairs for any period of time.
  • Moving and setting up heavy equipment.
  • Climbing and working off of ladders at heights of 10 feet or more.
  • Working in crawl spaces under buildings or home to perform work.
  • Working indoors and outdoors in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures (hot or cold, example boiler room).
  • Working in dirty or damp places.
  • Must take an aptitude test (Work Keys Assessments) and score an average of at least 4.334 out of a total of 7 to be interviewed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various work sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must pay $100 each year towards the cost of textbooks for required classes at the approved school.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and at the time of enrollment in apprenticeship.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
