Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Operating Engineers, Local Union #825, will conduct a recruitment from October 28, 2024 through November 8, 2024 for five Operating Engineer (Universal Equipment) apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the five openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions, the Hudson Valley and Southern Tier regions. 

Applications can be obtained on-line at http://www.iuoe825.org/home/join/apprenticeship/. The on-line portal opens at 8:00 A.M. for 24 hours a day until midnight on November 8, 2024, during the recruitment period, or until all 30 applications are exhausted. This is a limited-application recruitment.  Only 30 applications will be distributed, on a first-come, first-serve basis. The recruitment will be offered for 10 business days or until 30 applications have been issued, whichever comes firstApplications must be received by no later November 8, 2024. Applicants who do not have Internet access may visit their local library or visit local New York State Department of Labor Career Center (see: https://dol.ny.gov/career-centers).

High School transcript or equivalent documents must be uploaded within 24 hours of submitting the application.

Only the first one hundred (30) applications received will be considered for review.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application. A copy of birth certificate and social security card will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  Proof will be required at the time of submitting the application.
  • Must pass a substance abuse test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must pass a DOT physical, at sponsor’s expense, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job of am operating engineer including but are not limited to strength, stamina, coordination, dexterity, endurance, ability, good vision, hearing, balance and reflexes.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local 825, which includes the counties of Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan and Delaware. Proof of NYS residency in the jurisdiction of the local union will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship program.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a NYS Commercial Driver’s License. A copy of valid driver’s license will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship program.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must pass the Work Keys Locating Information Test to be eligible for an interview. Qualifying score is 3 out of 7.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
