The maximum number of child care slots available is referred to as childcare capacity.

Can the dashboard be used to find childcare centers in a specific area?

What age groups are served through the childcare industry?

  • Infants: children under 18 months old
  • Toddlers: 18-36 months old

  • School- Age Children: 6-12 years old

Is it possible to see childcare capacity for infants/toddlers only?
The dashboard provides childcare capacity statistics for children under 6 years of age instead of infants/toddlers only. This is because it is difficult to separate the number of infant/toddler/preschool age child care slots available for some of the home-based care centers in certain counties.

What is the difference between median family income and median earnings?
Median family income
is the income level that divides a population of families into two equal halves, with half of the families earning more than the median income and half earning less. Median earnings is the earnings level that divides a population of full-time year-round workers into two equal halves, with half of the workers earning more than the median earnings and half earning less.

What is the Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR)?
The labor force participation rate is the percentage of the civilian noninstitutional population 16 years and older that is either employed or unemployed.

How is the annual cost of childcare calculated?

The annual cost of child care is calculated by multiplying the weekly rates from Table 5 of the Office of Children and Family Services 2022 Child Care Market Rate Survey by 52. The rates are based on the 80th percentile of the 2021-22 New York State Child Care Market Rate Survey.

What employment data is used in the dashboard?
The dashboard uses occupational data from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) program. For more information on the OEWS program, please refer to the OEWS technical notes webpage.

The dashboard uses industry data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program. For more information on the QCEW program, please refer to the QCEW technical notes webpage.

Does the industry and occupational tab include employment and wage data for all child care workers in New York State?
No. The data on this tab of the dashboard only includes employment and wage data for child care workers in the child day care services industry who are covered by unemployment insurance. Many group and family child care providers are not covered by the unemployment insurance program. In addition, some employment may be counted in other industries because the employer’s primary business activity is something other than child day care.

How are wages calculated?

The annual average wage for the child care industry is calculated using the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) methodology. This methodology divides the total annual wages by the annual average employment in the industry. This includes wages for both full-time and part-time employment. For more information on the QCEW program, please refer to the QCEW technical notes webpage.

Occupational wages are calculated using the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) methodology. Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate, cost-of-living allowances, guaranteed pay, hazardous-duty pay, incentive pay (including commissions and production bonuses, tips, and on-call pay) are included. Back pay, jury duty pay, overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, non-production bonuses, and tuition reimbursements are excluded. For more information on the OEWS program, please refer to the OEWS technical notes webpage.
