Developments in the New York City Labor Market
Private sector jobs in New York City rose by 58,400 over-the-year to 4,146,700 in April 2024. Gains occurred in private education and health services (+77,900), leisure and hospitality (+10,800), financial activities (+600), and other services (+600). Losses occurred in information (-14,300), professional and business services (-6,800), natural resources, mining, and construction (-5,400), trade, transportation, and utilities (-3,800), and manufacturing (-1,200).
The city's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in April, down 0.1 of a percent from March and a decrease of 0.3 percent from April 2023. New York State's rate was 4.2 percent in April 2024. The share of the city's working age population (16+) who were either employed or looking for a job stood at 62.1 in April.
