In November 2022, New York State’s seasonally adjusted private sector job count increased by 19,600, or 0.2%, to 8,080,900. In addition, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 4.3% in November, while New York’s seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate held steady at 60.5%.
Capital
Over the past year, the private sector job count in the Capital Region rose by 10,100, or 2.4%, to 433,800 in November 2022. Job gains were largest in professional and business services (+3,900), educational and health services (+3,600), leisure and hospitality (+2,700), other services (+1,000) and financial activities (+700). Losses occurred in trade, transportation and utilities (-1,100) and manufacturing (-900).
Central NY
The number of private sector jobs in the Syracuse metro area increased over the past year by 9,000, or 3.6%, to 258,900 in November 2022. Employment gains were greatest in leisure and hospitality (+2,800), educational and health services (+2,100), trade, transportation and utilities (+1,700), professional and business services (+1,300), financial activities (+700) and other services (+400).
Finger Lakes
From November 2021 to November 2022, the private sector job count in the Rochester metro area rose by 4,900, or 1.1%, to 447,100. Job gains occurred in educational and health services (+1,700), manufacturing (+1,500), professional and business services (+1,400), other services (+900), natural resources, mining and construction (+800) and leisure and hospitality (+300). Employment losses were greatest in trade, transportation and utilities (-1,400) and financial activities (-200).
Hudson Valley
Over the past year, the number of private sector jobs in the Hudson Valley grew by 27,800, or 3.6%, to 799,500 in November 2022. The largest job gains occurred in educational and health services (+10,100), leisure and hospitality (+6,900), professional and business services (+6,500), natural resources, mining and construction (+4,300) and other services (+2,000). Over-the-year losses occurred in financial activities (-1,300) and manufacturing (-500).
Long Island
For the year ending November 2022, private sector jobs on Long Island increased by 16,400, or 1.5%, to 1,126,100. Gains occurred in leisure and hospitality (+8,300), educational and health services (+3,300), professional and business services (+3,300), trade, transportation and utilities (+2,400), other services (+1,100) and natural resources, mining and construction (+600). Employment losses were centered in financial activities (-2,400).
Mohawk Valley
For the 12-month period ending November 2022, the number of private sector jobs in the Mohawk Valley region rose by 2,100, or 1.5%, to 141,200. Over-the-year employment gains were greatest in leisure and hospitality (+900), educational and health services (+300), trade, transportation and utilities (+300) and other services (+200).
New York City
The private sector job count in New York City rose over the past year by 197,600, or 5.1%, to 4,038,900 in November 2022. Job gains were greatest in leisure and hospitality (+53,200), professional and business services (+49,300), educational and health services (+48,500), information (+13,400), other services (+11,500), financial activities (+11,200), trade, transportation and utilities (+6,600) and manufacturing (+3,900).
North Country
For the 12-month period ending November 2022, the private sector job count in the North Country region rose by 600, or 0.6%, to 106,800. Over-the-year employment gains were largest in leisure and hospitality (+500) and educational and health services (+300). Job losses were focused in trade, transportation and utilities (-400).
Southern Tier
For the 12-month period ending November 2022, the number of private sector jobs in the Southern Tier increased by 2,900, or 1.4%, to 215,900. Employment gains were greatest in educational and health services (+900), leisure and hospitality (+700), trade, transportation and utilities (+700), professional and business services (+600), financial activities (+300) and other services (+300). Over-the-year job losses occurred in information (-700).
Western NY
Over the past 12 months, the private sector job count in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metro area rose by 10,200, or 2.3%, to 459,700 in November 2022. Gains were largest in educational and health services (+2,800), trade, transportation and utilities (+2,100), professional and business services (+2,000), manufacturing (+1,700), other services (+1,000) and financial activities (+700). Employment losses were greatest in information (-200).
